  • About Our Company

    Sabba's Spicery's Story

    Sabba is Hebrew for grandfather. A name given to me by my two godsons, actually their mother who is from Israel.


    The Spicery was actually a high office in the kitchen staff of medieval royalty and wealthy landholders in Europe. It also referred to a section of the pantry that could be kept cool and dry. The spicery was to maintain the quality and quantity of all spices used in the kitchen, from salt and pepper to much more exotic fare.


    Most of world history is based, in one fashion or another, on spice. People the world over have looked for ways to liven up the meals that they create for themselves and loved ones. This led to great missions of exploration, from prehistoric times to the present, to find sources of fine exotic spices, herbs and seasonings. The Silk Road, Marco Polo and Christopher Columbus are but a few of these intrepid explorers and spice pioneers. So, if you want to ...Taste History, Eat Spice!


    An avid cook and reader of history for all his life, "Sabba" (real name Scott) lives in Long Beach with his beautiful wife Kathy and two cats, Baby and Willie. He finds inspiration for cooking from world history and personal history and believes that, not only love, but food is a universal language.

    With the New Year upon us, we at Sabba’s Spicery would like to thank our patrons for a great 2017! We’ve heard from numerous customers on the creative and inventive uses of our spice blends. We thank you for sharing this with us. We look forward to more of your feedback and hope to use our website as a collective of these first-hand suggestions.


    In the Spring, we will be producing a new crop of Sunflower Blend and Scarborough Faire. Please let us know if you are looking for any particular styles of blends we may have missed. We would love to put together some special blends with our customers preferences in mind.

    Put spices to work outside the kitchen

    Make a Hair Tonic

    A fun fact that can spice up your hair care regimen with a homemade tonic that will enhance your natural colour and impart shine. For dark hair, use 1 tablespoon crumbled sage or 1 sprig chopped fresh rosemary or a mixture of 1 teaspoon allspice, 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon, and ½ teaspoon ground cloves. For blond hair, use 1 tablespoon chamomile. Pour 1 cup boiling water over the herb and spice mix, let it steep for 30 minutes, strain it through a coffee filter, and let it cool. Pour it repeatedly over your hair (use a dishpan to catch the runoff) as a final rinse after shampooing.

    Treat Minor Cuts

    Here’s the inside scoop on your extra seasonings: If you nick your finger while chopping vegetables for dinner, you may not even need to leave the kitchen for first aid. Alum, the old-fashioned pickling salt at the back of your spice cupboard, is an astringent. In a pinch, sprinkle some on a minor cut to stanch the flow of blood.

    Keep Feet Smelling Sweet

    Another great secret about your seasonings: If you use sage only to stuff turkeys, then you’ve been missing out. Sage is great for preventing foot odour because it kills the odour-causing bacteria that grow on your feet in the warm, moist environment inside your shoes. Just crumble a leaf or two into your shoes before you put them on. At the end of the day, just shake the remains into the trash.

    Bay Leafs Keep Ants at Bay

    Flour, sugar, and paprika can all fall prey to ants, in fact many spices can. Keep these cooking essentials safe by slipping a bay leaf inside your storage containers. If you’re concerned about the flour or sugar picking up a bay leaf flavour, tape the leaf to the inside of the canister lid. This trick works inside cabinets, too, where sachets of sage, bay, stick cinnamon, or whole cloves will smell pleasant while discouraging ants.

    Great Food Starts With Great Spices

    Homemade Curry Powder

    • 1/2 cup Paprika
    • 1/4 cup Cumin
    • 1 tablespoon Fennel Powder
    • 2 Tablespoons Fenugreek powder (optional)- gives sweetness
    • 2 tablespoons Ground Mustard Powder
    • 1 tablespoon ground Red Pepper Flakes (optional)- adds spiciness
    • 3 tablespoons ground Coriander (optional)
    • 1/4 cup ground Turmeric root
    • 1 tablespoon ground Cardamon (optional)
    • 1 teaspoon Cinnamon Powder
    • 1/2 teaspoon Cloves Powder (optional) – Adds complex flavor

    Mix all ingredients in a bowl, jar or food processor and store in an air-tight container until ready to use. Can be used on meats, vegetables or in soups.


    Ranch Dressing

    • 1/4 cup dried Parsley leaf
    • 1 Tablespoon Dill leaf
    • 1 tablespoon Garlic Powder
    • 1 tablespoon Onion Powder
    • 1/2 teaspoon Basil leaf (optional)
    • 1/2 teaspoon ground black pepper

    Mix all ingredients together in jar or food processor. To make into Ranch Dressing, mix 1 Tablespoon of this mix with 1/3 cup Greek Yogurt and 1/4 cup Coconut Milk.
